Alfa Romeo was founded as "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili" (A.L.F.A.) in Milan, Italy, on June 24, 1910, after Ugo Stella acquired the Italian plant of the French car manufacturer Darracq. A.L.F.A. made its racing debut in 1911, marking the start of its long association with motorsport.
In 1915, Nicola Romeo took over the company and diversified its production into industrial machinery and equipment. Enzo Ferrari joined Alfa Romeo as a racing driver in 1920, where his leadership and organisational skills soon stood out, despite a driving career that included a second-place finish at the 1920 Targa Florio.
By 1929, Ferrari shifted from driving to team management, founding Scuderia Ferrari, which initially managed Alfa Romeo’s factory racing team. Even after parting ways, Ferrari's time at Alfa Romeo played a crucial role in his development, intertwining their legacies and cementing both brands' places in motorsport history.
The Quadrifoglio story begins with Alfa Romeo driver Ugo Sivocci in the early 1920s, who was known for his talent but also for frequent near-misses. In 1923, ahead of the Targa Florio race in Sicily, Sivocci requested his team to paint a green four-leaf clover inside a white square on his Alfa Romeo for good luck. He won the race, marking Alfa Romeo’s major victory and establishing the clover as a good luck charm for the team.
Tragically, Sivocci died later that year during a practice run at Monza while driving an Alfa Romeo without the clover, reinforcing its perceived protective power. After his death, Alfa Romeo adopted the Quadrifoglio as a symbol of good fortune and high performance, placing it in a white triangle on their racing cars, with the missing point representing Sivocci’s absence.
Today, the Quadrifoglio continues to be featured on Alfa Romeo’s high-performance models, such as the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio, honoring Sivocci and Alfa Romeo’s racing heritage and commitment to excellence.
Alfa Romeo is a pioneer in Grand Prix racing and a symbol of victory. The brand emphasizes grip and handling over mere straight-line speed. For 114 years, Alfa Romeo has infused its vehicles with the soul and energy that define its legacy in their vehicles today.
