If you’re looking to buy a new car in 2017, Thames Motor Group recommends buying a model before the changes to road tax are implemented on April 1. After this date in spring, all newly registered models will adhere to the new government guidelines on vehicle tax (VED).
Under the new system, there will be a first year rate which is model dependent, followed by a standard rate for all models. Previously untaxable vehicles now have yearly rates, and the larger or more inefficient the vehicle, the higher the road tax in the first year. Many drivers who choose to buy a similar car as their current model in the future could therefore incur an cost increase on their yearly fee.
Here’s what you need to know about the changes to road tax:
How to avoid the increase
To avoid an increase in your road tax, it is worth investing in a new model before April 1 to benefit from the old system. By buying a low-emissions vehicle now, you could also still benefit from the zero road tax.
