Alfa Romeo unveils 2016 Giulia and Giulietta releases

White Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio 2016

Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo has used this month's Geneva International Motor Show to release full details of its new stylish executive saloon, the Giulia. Set to take on rivals including the Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and the BMW 3 Series, the new Giulia range is expected to arrive in the UK this September.

Alfa released details of the Giulia in its range-topping Quadrifoglio trim with a Ferrari-developed 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine last year, but it's only now that details of the complete line-up have been shared. Four, all-new powertrain options will be available at launch – two petrol, two diesel – with outputs ranging from 150hp to 510hp. Sitting alongside the V6 will be a 200hp, 2.0-litre turbo engine, while diesel options come in the form of a 2.2-litre turbo with a power output of either 150hp or 180hp.

The car will be available in three trim levels – Giulia, Super and Quadrifoglio – although precise details of what each version will offer have yet to be confirmed.

By opting for a real-wheel drive setup, the new Giulia features short overhangs, a long bonnet and muscular haunches. Alfa also claims perfect 50/50 weight distribution, ensuring dynamic handling. Driving comfort is supported by four-arm Alfa Link rear suspension and a new double-wishbone front setup. The car's overall weight has been minimised through the use of ultra-lightweight materials, including aluminium for the doors and carbon fibre for the car's driveshaft.

The streamlined cabin of the new Giulia features carbon fibre and wood, and makes use of just two simple knobs to control the infotainment system and drive settings. A 3.5-inch or seven-inch colour display will detail critical driver information, while an 8.8-inch Connect Nav 3D system with voice recognition will handle everything from navigation to music streaming.

A range of advanced safety features will come as standard on the new Alfa Romeo Giulia, including a more responsive electromechanical braking system, and a collision warning and autonomous braking system that makes use of radar sensors and cameras to detect obstacles in the car's path.

The new Giulia models won't start arriving at Thames Motor Group showrooms until the autumn, but Alfa fans will be pleased to hear that a refreshed version of the Giulietta is due this April.

The new model's styling has been enhanced using design elements from the new Giulia. The revised front-end features a new honeycomb grille and piano black bumper inserts, plus new-look headlamp and fog lamp surrounds. New alloy wheel designs will also be available, along with revised tail pipes and a host of new colour schemes. A new 120hp, 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine also debuts.

The interior of the updated Alfa Romeo Giulietta comes equipped with revised seat upholsteries, as well as new dashboard and door panel finishes. New connectivity options are also available, including Alfa Performance – a service designed to enhance the overall driving experience through the use of digital gauges and instruments.
