Alfa Romeo has released its
first SUV in more than 100 years in the form of the Stelvio. Distinctly Alfa Romeo in its good looks
and smooth performance, it’s hotly anticipated! Inspired by Italy's highest mountain pass - an epic 20 kilometre driving route with 48 hairpins - the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been built to offer an engaging driving experience while still maintaining the driver's comfort.
Built on the looks of the Giulia with its slicing headlights and deep side contours, the Stelvio is a particularly smart SUV. Two large air intakes sit in the bumper for sporty appeal and to boost the performance. It’s surprisingly compact for an SUV at just over 4.5 metres in length and approximately two metres wide. The Quadrifoglio version comes with four tailpipes, a spoiler and a diffuser, the rear is just as sporty for an all-round athletic stance.
The interior has been totally designed around the driver, putting you firmly in the prime driving position. There’s a diagonal tunnel and it has a minimalist, clutter-free design with just a few controls close to the steering wheel that’s relatively small for easy handling. Expect plenty of style thanks to premium materials such as wood, leather and carbon fibre depending on the trim level or extras you choose.
The new Stelvio will be available with three engines – one petrol and two diesel variants. The 2.0-litre petrol unit is turbo charged with 280bhp while the 2.2-litre diesels put out 180bhp and 210bhp. Built entirely of aluminium, the petrol engine is light weight and has best-in-class acceleration with 400Nm of torque at 2,250rpm. If you choose the more powerful diesel, you can expect to reach 0-60mph in less than seven seconds. All engine choices are mated to eight-speed automatic transmission and have state-of-the-art all-wheel drive for top agility.
It’s made to be more than
capable – it’s a fun SUV to drive. With AlfalinkTM technology, it has an
impressively direct steering ratio and the use of carbon fibre aluminium keeps
light for greater responsiveness. It also has a perfect 50:50 weight ratio
helping to keep you comfortable.
In the dashboard sits an 8.8-inch display which is controlled through a rotary pad on the central tunnel. You can use it to work the DAB digital radio and your smartphone using the Bluetooth connectivity or USB and AUX ports. There is the option to upgrade the system to include satellite navigation with 3D mapping. With eight speakers as standard, any tunes you play will sound crisp and loud.
Thanks to the Alfa's beautifully responsive steering and 50:50 weight distribution, an unforgettable ride is guaranteed every time you get behind the wheel. While you’re driving you can select one of three driving modes named D.N.A: Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency. Choose the one that suits the road or your mood and it will adjust the components to give the best performance.
To remove much of the stress of driving and to keep you safe, the Stelvio comes with Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Brake, Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Monitoring. Whether you’re in the city or the country, these systems help to prevent an accident by detecting potential hazards for you. It’s the first car to combine stability control with a servo brake, making the stopping distances impressively short.
